One of the most recognizable paintings by Frida Kahlo is "Self-portrait with a necklace of thorns and a hummingbird", which was created in 1940.The author was then 30 years old and had many unpleasant experiences in her life. The painting measures 63.5 x 49.5 cm and was painted in oil on canvas. It shows Frida entwined in prickly vines. The painter is accompanied by a monkey and a black cat. Animals symbolize evil, bad luck and death. Diego Rivera - the artist who was the husband of Frida Kahlo gave her one of the animals - a monkey that pulls the thorns causing pain to the painter. It is a symbol of suffering and disappointed love. In contrast, the hummingbird necklace in indigenous Mexican culture is considered a talisman associated with love. A dead bird symbolizes an extinct feeling.
The woman has her characteristic jointed eyebrow and a serious expression, without any expression of pain. She looks very indifferent and absent. She is wearing a white blouse that can symbolize innocence. The picture was made after Frida's divorce. This was probably the way she wanted to express her inner suffering.
In the background, a variety of fertile leaves can be seen, contrasting with the sinister symbols in the foreground.
The composition of the work is closed and symmetrical. Warm colors dominate, and the tone of the work is bright and cheerful. The colors are quite intense. The light shines directly on Frida's face, creating a shadow behind her. Her painting style is very realistic and accurate, the smallest details are marked.
Personally, I find the self-portrait intriguing and mysterious. It is fascinating to discover the probable sense of the work through the symbols placed on it. In this way, you can get to know the feelings accompanying the author in its creation.
