Wheatfield with Crows
‘Wheatfield with Crows' is an oil painting created in 19th century. It was painted by Vincent van Gogh. The dimensions of this image are 50.5 cm x 103cm. This picture can be found in the Van Gogh Museum, in Amsterdam.
When we look at this picture, we may feel anxious. It seems to be justified because in many cultures large black birds are a harbinger of bad events. This paiting shows a rural landscape named Auverssur-Oise. There is a large wheatfield with black like night crows and brown streets. The sky on this image is decorated in dark colors but in some places we can also see brighter shades. You can see the contrast between the mixture of black, violet and blue on the sky with the yellowness of the fields and a bit of greenery. This work has got a lot of interpretations. Although, crows are seen as a sign of bad things to come, in others they are considered to be messengers from the gods. Crows often appear as trickster characters in folklore and legend. One of all says that crows symbolize death, streets-irresolution and sky-lonelines. Looking at the interpretations of this picture, the atmosphere is dark and mysterious.
In my opinion, ‘Wheatfield with Crows’ is a beautiful painting with interesting interpretation but also it has got an eye-friendly colors. Although it is undoubtedly a treat for the artist’s fans, it does not quite suit my tastes. I prefer joyful and enthusiastic landscapes evoking positive emotions. I do love to see it live in the Museum.
