Joan Miro is a Spanish artist. He painted a series of 23 paintings „The Constellations” in 1940-1941, when he was running away from Word War II. Miro drew „ Woman and Birds” in Varanzhevil. One week later he escaped to Paris.
„Woman and Birds” is surreal painting. When we look at it, the first things we see are colored figures. There are blue star, white circle, black triangle and much more. To find woman and birds (whih are in the title) we have to look longer. These characters are hidden in the sky full of stars. Miro drew a lot of lines turned into constellations.
The background is also colred. Miro mixed many colors (blue, red, yellow) to make the sky look fantastic.
I really like this painting. It is a bit chaotic (like a real sky), but it shows dreams of Joan Miro. He always liked to look out of the window at night, watch the sky and stars. When the Word War II started he turned off the lights and curtained the windows to protect himself from the bombing. „The Constellations” series is his dream and memory of better times.
