It is an oil on canvas. It can
now be found in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. A Field of Wheat with Crows
is one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. Here the perspective is reversed.
Van Gogh used a horizontal composition. The composition is open, dynamic and
aspires to symmetry. The painting may symbolize the artist's feelings at the
time of its creation - the roads are a symbol of separation, and the black
ravens are a symbol of death and fall. The terrifying sky, crows and still life
were used to show that the end of Vincent's life was coming. These feelings are
also heightened by the dark, stormy sky. Van Gogh wanted the stormy sky to show
his emotions, which were sadness and extreme loneliness, but he also wanted us
to see what is beautiful in the countryside. Van Gogh used strong color
combinations in this painting: the blue sky contrasts with the yellow-orange
field and the red of the road, which is intensified by the green strips of
green grass. It is often claimed that it was his last work, some people say
that he even painted it on his last walk when he shot himself in the breast
while standing in the wheatfields he was painting, but missed his heart.
Disappointed, he returned to his apartment. When the owner of his
apartment went to check what had happened and why Vincent hadn't shown up for
dinner, the man was lying on his bed. "You see," he - he said -
"I wanted to kill myself, but it didn't work out." A doctor came to
him, but didn't take the bullet out of him. When he said that they were going
to save Vincent, he said: "Why ... sadness will last a lifetime."
Vincent seemed not to fell any pain, he smoked his pipe and talked at length
with his brother to whom, in his last letter, he wrote: "Only our
paintings can speak for us.''. Looking at the painting, you can see the
dominance of two colors: blue and yellow. The stormy sky meets the waving
golden yellow grain. Only from the bottom and sides of the painting there is a
calm green. The painting provokes a certain anxiety due to the incoming storm
and the dark ravens towering over the field. By giving independent life to
patches of color, Vincent van Gogh was creating modern art. This painting makes
me feel anxious, but at the same time an admiration. It is amazing how
perfectly Van Gogh was able to express his feelings on canvas.
