Guernica -
Picasso
Author: Pablo Picasso
Title: Guernica
Year of creation: 1937
Technique: Oil painting
Pablo Picasso's painting GUERNICA, is not only an outstanding
work of art, but also an anti-war icon, a symbol of opposition to war. In it,
the artist depicted the tragedy of the bombed Basque city of Guernica in 1937.
Referring to and condemning the Guernica raid, he issued a timeless painterly
anti-war manifesto.
'Guernica' has been called one of the most moving paintings
in history. The painter used only white, black and grey. There is no other
colour here. Picasso used matt paints to create the painting. The colours of
the painting can be closely compared to old war photographs. Picasso worked on
the painting for 35 days, but he had helpers. John Ferren, an American artist,
sketched along with him, and all Picasso's work was captured by Dora Maar, a
photographer.
The painting shows the death and horror of people during a
bombing in wartime. The artist showed the tragedy through painted remains and
crying women. This is not an easy work to read. Elements of the painting even
to overlap. The figures are deformed, yet give the impression of being in motion.
The victims are people and animals. On the left, a despairing mother with a
dead child is shown and, at the bottom of the painting, a dead soldier with a
broken sword. On the right, three figures are shown: a kneeling woman, a person
with a drawn candle and a figure trapped in a burning building.
