Murnau -
landschaft mit Grunem Haus (Murnau – landscape with green house) is an
Expressionist masterpiece made by one of the 20th century’s most influential
painters Wassily Kandinsky, made when the artist switched his focus from
figurative to abstract art. It was created in 1909 with oil on board and its
size is 70 by 96cm.
The
composition is dynamic and asymmetrical and the colors are really vibrant and
contrasting which adds to the chaotic style of the painting. In the foreground
we can see a golden yellow field at the bottom, a lime house standing behind a
deep green tree on the left and a dark blue fence on the right. In the middle
ground bright green grass and two trees; a bigger, yellowish one, and another
smaller, dark green one are visible. In the background, we can see dark green,
almost black flora and plenty of colorful buildings in mostly blue, purple, and
red tones. The sky is full of different colors too, the left side is light and
pinkish while the right side is more contrasting and ranges from lime to dark
blue. Everything is painted using thick, short strokes and has a black outline
which makes the painting look a bit childish and sketch-like.
Even
though, usually I wouldn’t say I like abstract piecesI do love this one, likely
because it’s a bit more figurative than most abstract art.
